In 1886 the Hunt fruit cannery began operations in the small agricultural town of Gridley, California. Later, in 1932, The Libby company purchased the cannery which went on to become the largest peach and pumpkin cannery in the world. Ceasing operations in 2001, the cannery sat idle for years until discovered by a young glass artist looking for a site to build his studio hence, Sutherland Glass Art was born.
In keeping with the history of the site, the first thing out of the furnace was “Fizzle Fruit©"
”This bubbly, fizzy exquisite glass fruit symbolically rekindles the energy of times past when the cannery was thriving and in full swing.
Fizzle Fruit honors the cannery’s rich history while keeping its legacy alive.
